Carnelian is a red-brown colored mineral usually found in Germany, Brazil, India and Siberia. It is a semi-precious gemstone that is a variety of chalcedony (quartz family mineral). Its color, which can range from a pale orange to a near-black coloration, derives from iron oxide impurities. During roman times, carnelian was engraved and used for signet or seal rings, since wax will not stick to it. It has also been carved into beads for jewelry. Carnelian has a trigonal crystal system and exhibits a hardness of 6-7 on Moh's scale, a specific gravity of 2.59-2.61, a vitreous, dull, greasy or silky luster, and is translucent.
