    From CrystalDictionary.com:
Carnelian is a red-brown colored mineral usually found in Germany, Brazil, India and Siberia. It is a semi-precious gemstone that is a variety of chalcedony (quartz family mineral). Its color, which can range from a pale orange to a near-black coloration, derives from iron oxide impurities. During roman times, carnelian was engraved and used for signet or seal rings, since wax will not stick to it. It has also been carved into beads for jewelry. Carnelian has a trigonal crystal system and exhibits a hardness of 6-7 on Moh's scale, a specific gravity of 2.59-2.61, a vitreous, dull, greasy or silky luster, and is translucent.
Carnelian is a stone of many metaphysical benefits. If you are an athlete or even simply participating in an exercise program, wearing or keeping this gemstone with you may aid you in your endeavors. It is believed to boost an apathetic, lethargic attitude and stimulate appetite, as well as manage energy levels within the body. If you are a builder, architect, or construction worker, carnelian might aid you in your creation of masterpiece buildings and shield you from injury through accidents with your tools. If you serve in the military, it could enhance your stamina and power. If you are a journalist, it may promote organization and form in your writings. If you are a singer or performer, consider exploiting it for its ability to clarify the voice and lend confidence. Last, but not least, if you are a salesperson, keeping carnelian as a companion would probably serve as motivation. Clearly, this is a stone for just about everyone. In any workplace, it is said to promote determination, drive and ambition in employees, while at the same time ward off pressures related to unreasonable expectations. In the home, it is believed to provide protection from storms, fire, theft or other accidents. If it is good luck, prosperity and new resources you seek, you are in luck, because carnelian is commonly used as a talisman of success. Try keeping it around if you would like to experience pragmatism, idealism, and a sense of community, or if you are trying to rekindle passion in your relationship or conceive a child.
Physical healing energy is also given off by carnelian. Crystal healers use it to stimulate proper blood circulation and the metabolism, increase fertility, and ease symptoms of menopause and PMS. It may even increase one's chances of success in artificial and in vitro fertilization. It is claimed to promote absorption of minerals, vitamins and nutrients in the small intestine, and reduce phlebitis, congestion, hemorrhoids, varicose veins, and skin irritations and boils. It may also help to heal rheumatism, arthritis, back problems, neuralgia, depression, and injured or broken ligaments and bones, and provide support for those trying to detoxify from drugs or alcohol or break bad habits. Carnelian is a wonderful stone for the improvement of our overall health.
